Where do you go after you die? Timeless question. In the funny, quirky, dark movie, Wristcutters: A Love Story, this question of where we go (based on how you die) is presented to us in an interestingly conceptual way.
The film opens with Zia (Patrick Fugit) killing himself, followed by him waking up in Purgatory. Purgatory looks just like the normal world, but less crowded and way more dull. No one smiles and people spend their time trying to guess how each other offed themselves. We aren’t told why Zia has killed himself but with flashbacks shown of him with his girlfriend Desiree (Leslie Bibb) it’s safe to assume they broke up and he couldn’t take it. Zia forms a friendship with a local Russian named Eugene (Shia Whigham) who lives with his entire family in sunny ol’ Purgatory. That’s right. His entire family all committed suicide. One day while shopping, Zia is told by an old friend that Desiree killed herself shortly after he did. In an attempt to be with the one he loves again, Zia and Eugene set out on a road trip to find Desiree. Along the way, they pick up the amazingly hot hitchhiking beauty, Mikal (Shannyn Sossamon) who is searching for the “P.I.C” (People In Charge) so she can leave because she’s “not supposed to be there because it wasn’t a for real suicide.”
I’m biased on this movie because Shannyn Sossamon is the fucking tops! Seriously, scroll up and look at her in that picture. Just wearin’ a faded hoodie with barely any makeup on and a haircut that looks like she did it herself with a pair of Fisher-Price scissors. Droooooooooooool.
While it revolves around a super-heavy subject; suicide, Wristcutters: A Love Story is definitely a good time. It also lives up to it’s title. While it may not be on the level of The Notebook or A Moment To Remember (Korean), it has it’s touching moments as a love story.
Patrick Fugit and Shia Whigham are both pretty cool actors as well. Their dysfunctional friendship is fun to watch and with Sossamon added to the mix, it’s even better. The moments where Fugit and Sossamon share the screen are funny and uplifting as well as captivating and sincere.
If you have a girl, or guy, who likes a non-traditional love story that takes place inside a weird movie about a weird place, definitely add this to your Netflix queue. (Fuck Blockbuster)
6.3 out of 10.
